Hustle Hoarding: Coupons…and Dating?

August 7, 2007 Hustle Hoarding 14 Comments

Hustling is more than just making money, it’s also knowing when and how to save money and time — two commodities that you can never have enough of. Hustle Hoarding is a new feature that details several ways to save money, time, or both. Next to water, they are the most sought after resources on the planet.

Stop acting like you have one.

This week, the topic of hoarding is the use of coupons. Some use them religiously, while others think it’s a foreign word. Whatever the case, this has to be one of the easiest and most overlooked ways to hoard your cash. Taking 5-10 minutes to clip coupons out of a Sunday paper can yield you hundreds of savings per year, and more when you count the number of retailers who will automatically double the value at the checkout (usually up to $0.50).

You don’t necessarily have to subscribe to the paper to get the deals, but a subscription sure beats paying out of pocket each time you want a paper. To give an example, my Sunday papers cost $2. Multiply that times 4, and that’s $8/month. Not bad considering you can save over $100 every week if you used all the coupons. I once saw my grocery bill go from $165 to $75 strictly by using the coupons that I had (needless to say, the people in the lone behind me were amazed! Don’t tell them but I was too!)

A subscription to the paper costs me $11.88 (tax included), and I get the paper every single day so to not miss out on any and all of the mid-week deals! I often get coupons for free movie screenings; last week I saw the Bourne Ultimatum for free (EXCELLENT movie, by the way), and had tickets to see J Lo’s new movie as well (but I didn’t go to that one. Hey, after the whole Gigli fiasco, I I don’t even see her movies even if someone else pays!). With the average price of a ticket hovering near $10, I’ve already made back the price of my subscription plus more! Plus the coupons usually admit two people in for free, AND before the movie officially premieres, so you can score points by inviting someone you’ve had your eye on and pay only for transportation.

Tight.

People wonder how I go to the movies for free all the time. I just tell them it’s because I’m a hustler. :)

Still on the subject of dating, don’t be shy about using coupons there too! People think it’s cheap to pull out a coupon when it’s time to pay, but those are usually the people who aren’t paying! I will whip out one faster than the time it takes to set the bill down on the table. If the woman doesn’t like it, she can pay her half, and then I know she wasn’t for me anyway! Paying full price doesn’t make you cool or elevate your lot in life, you just look like another fool that doesn’t know any better. Like Mr. T says, I Pity the Fool who doesn’t know the value of a coupon!

  1. I’ve never been one to use coupons, but maybe I should start. Could always use the extra money since money is tight

  2. Yeah, there’s nothing wrong with saving a buck. True hustlers know to stay away from the high-maintenance hoochies! Great post!

  3. dcr says:

On the flip side, be careful how much time you spend clipping, managing and using coupons. You may find that the time spent doing all that work nullifies the savings the coupons provide.

The images really made this post so much more interesting.

Brian – what are you waiting for? Do you want Mr. T to come visit you? :)

Michael – Thanks! And True love is tow people hustling together!

dcr – It doesn’t take long to skim the paper and go through some coupons. About 10-15 minutes on average. Get to clipping!

    Carl – Thanks so much!

    Hi!
I’ve just written a small review on your blog (with links) as you were in the ‘Fair View’ directory.

Enjoyed a few of your posts + they made me smile!

    Best wishes,
    Mike.

  7. I love coupons! This holds true for everything that I buy…

Hey, great post but I have a feeling we may have different ideas about dating! It’s all good and well for people to want to save a few dimes, but when taking someone on a first date, not many women would appreciate seeing a coupon. Instead of going to an expensive restaurant, why not choose something more affordable.

Coupons (most of us Aussies use special discount gold cards) are great when you are actually dating. I’ve never heard of a woman complaining but on a first date? No thanks.

@ Mike – Thanks for the glowing review! I have been to Mike’s site, and I have to say he is a bona fide hustler! I encourge everyone to visit him because he has some good information listed.

@ Budget Babe – I never understood that about women, and I honestly never want to. If the company is good and you go to a nice place, AND you aren’t offering to pay anything (keyword: offer), it really shouldn’t matter.

I’ve gone to free movies with many people and only paid for snacks, we had a great time!

  11. Budget Babe says:

Coolio, I come from the old school. I remember once offering to pay my share on a date (I was at university at the time) and my date put his hand over my purse and asked me, “Who asked who out? So you can put that away”. I learnt early on that a gentleman would never allow a girl to pay (particularly on a first date). Women reciprocate in other ways, making dinner, preparing picnics etc.

The other reason women do not want to see a coupon on first dates is because (many times this is subconscious), we need to know that a man can care for us financially once married. We have babies, our careers are usually disrupted to raise families etc and many times the man is left being the sole bread winner. Generally too, people do not like tightwads and being married to one is a nightmare (I’ve seen those marriages and they are not in the slightest fun to observe).

So yes, I am from the old school but it worked for my parents (and theirs!) so it can’t be all that bad ;-)

  12. Debo Hobo says:

Let me tell you something, if a brother whips out a coupon to pay for dinner or date and I see it, I can guarante we will not be going out again. A first date is suppose to be extravagant and handing the waiter a coupon says look at me I’m cheap and so is my date. Now if he can pull it off and I don’t see it and we become a dating couple then I am all for saving cash, that just means the diamond will be larger.

Sorry I just had a Gold Digger moment! Coupons should be used when appropriate.

    Thanks for the article:)

“so to not miss out on any and all of the mid-week deals!”

    How many?

  14. cooliojones says:

Tech – the ones that have the free movie passes and info on other events that aren’t in the weekend edition. There are quite a few most times.
